IIR National Privacy Innovation Awards

The IIR National Privacy Innovation Awards are awarded to governments, firms and organizations that positively distinguish themselves by applying privacy friendly services or applications within the company. There are four categories in which registrations can be nominated:

  • Company solutions
  • Consumer solutions
  • Government services
  • Startups

The first step consisted of screening applicants on the way the following issues are being handled:

  • Having someone in the company responsible for privacy.
  • Applying a privacy policy.
  • Applying risk analyses.
  • Privacy awareness within the organization.
  • A comprehensible privacy policy and communication of this policy.

Subsequently nominated participants were screened on matters such as innovative power, technological originality, business model, scalability of solution, type of implementation, and contribution to Netherlands Privacy Guideland (Nederland Privacy Gidsland).

Jury of the IIR National Privacy Innovation Awards

The jury consists of the following members:

  • Paul Korremans (member), vice chairman of the NGFG
  • Dr John Borking (member), EuropriSe GMBH, former Dutch Data Protection Authority
  • Drs Bas Filippini (jury chairman), chairman of the Privacy First Foundation

Nominations

From the applicants the following companies were nominated:

  • Privacy Perfect, a company that specializes in data mapping & governance. It performs privacy impact analyses within a company related, and linked to new European laws and regulations.
  • Pseudonimiseer, a company that acts as a third party to suppliers and customers of data. It encrypts data of the linked identity.
  • Ixquick, a privacy friendly search engine that acts as a third party for searches to Google and other search engines. It prevents these search engines to identify the identity of the person that submitted the search query.
  • Qiy, a platform for pseudo ID’s to anonymously serve and buy online.
  • Whitebox Systems, an encrypted method for selective data exchange of patient information in the context of ‘doctors confidentiality’.

Winners IIR National Privacy Innovation Awards 2015

The Awards were handed out on the annual National Congress Dataprotection & Privacy by the well-known trainings- and seminar organization IRR at the Westcord Fashion Hotel Amsterdam. More than 80 participants attended.

“The winners are important forerunners in a new industry in which the Netherlands can become an international Privacy Guideland. Where pollution is a negative side effect of the industrial revolution, privacy violations are a negative side effect of the information revolution” said Bas Filippini, chairman of the jury.

Ixquick” is a profitable company, with a privacy friendly and anonymous search engine on which millions of search queries are already being performed, primarily in the United States and Germany. The company will also start with an anonymous email service that doesn’t store and analyze messages. It functions like the Internet Post office of tomorrow.

Privacy Perfect” excellently responds tot his trend by making privacy impact scans easier to perform, and by improving privacy measures within organizations. Fast and effective insights on data information management can be gathered through the customer friendly software dashboard. A fine solution that could also catch on internationally.

Finally, we have awarded Whitebox Systems the start-up encouragement prize, because they focus on medical confidentiality, and are already being used by a number of general practitioners. “It would benefit the entire health care system to take a good look at this company, instead of at the current central and IT oriented Dutch health care provider platform LSP”, said Filippini.
